Support for Students with SEND (Level 6)

The Level 6 Certificate is aimed at Personal Careers Advisers/Career Coaches who already have a recognised Qualification  at level 6 or above.  Please note that only those qualified at level 6 or above in Career Guidance and Development  are qualified to provide personal career guidance

There are currently no existing qualifications for specialist advisers who work with SEND or specialist training within the qualification pathways.  This training addresses this gap and is available as either a non-accredited or accredited course.  It is suitable for those who are new to working with a SEND caseload and for those who wish to develop their skills and knowledge

The course comprises 5 modules

Module 1

  • Key legislation
  • Our perceptions of ‘disability’
  • Client perception of us

Module 2

  • Experiencing communication differently
  • Strategies for effective communication

Module 3

  • Decision making processes
  • Does disability affect decision making?
  • Supporting decision making

Module 4

  • Working with a circle of support
  • Person-centred planning, mental capacity and preparing for adulthood

Module 5            

  • Resources and tools
  • Continuing your professional development

Training support

  • Pre reading materials which will be sent to candidates at least two weeks before the course commences
  • Recorded webinars
  • Workbook to support your learning
  • Live action learning sets

The live virtual sessions will be conducted on Zoom and will be recorded so that you can refer to these in future. Participants will need to have access to a camera and microphone in order to access this training.

The following OCR units make up the accredited route for this programme

  • Unit 7 Work with other agencies (6 credits)
  • Unit 10 Understand how to support specific client groups to overcome barriers to learning, training and work (3 credits)
  • Unit 9 Advocate on behalf of clients

Participants can choose to take either the accredited or non-accredited routes. Those who wish to follow the accredited route will have three additional zoom sessions to provide guidance on the evidence requirements to meet the above units and will have a named assessor to support them towards completion of the units
