UK manufacturing needs ‘bold reforms’ to the skills system
Make UK’s latest report, ‘The Shape of British Industry’ shows that the ambitions for the sector won’t be realised without reform of the skills system.
The report outlines the current state of UK manufacturing as a key part of the UK’s future growth, as well as highlighting the key factors that will affect the future success of the sector.
A central theme from the report is the need for skills reform, with an estimated £1 billion of skills levies unused by businesses, despite skills shortages. Make UK call for these funds to be released to add over 200,000 apprenticeship starts and tackle the skills gaps.
Among their calls for action is better careers education, information, advice and guidance, clear skills forecasts to inform activities including careers guidance and boosting mid-career training.
