Students want more as they see college careers support halve
Students in colleges call form more careers support as new research shows support activity has halved in the last three years.
FE Week reports that research by the Association of Colleges and Youth Employment UK from 2,174 college and sixth-form students, showed only 51% said their institution supported them to develop the skills needed for the future, and that careers activity has dropped significantly since 2023.
Careers lessons fell from 80% of students to just 32%, face-to-face careers advice fell from 75% to 49%, and mentoring dropped from 45% to 22%. In 20233 63% of students said an employer had visited their college, this year it was around a third. Visits to employers also fell, from 26% to 12%.
Student feedback highlighted that they wanted more one-to-one careers support, more employer interaction and clearer information about apprenticeships and employment routes.
