Qualifying as a Careers Leader
Careers Leaders work in schools and colleges to establish a careers strategy and implement the careers programme.
There are two main routes to qualify as a Careers Leader:
- CEC-funded training for Careers Leaders working in English state schools and colleges.
- Units 17, 18 and 19 from the Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development offered by OCR centres, including the CDI. This is not CEC funded.
The CDI is an approved training provider for CEC-funding Careers Leader training.
Unless otherwise accredited, Careers Leaders training does not qualify you to offer careers information, advice and guidance.

- State-funded schools and colleges
- Special schools
- Pupil Referral Units
- Alternative Provisions
It is available whether the Careers Leader is new to the role or has been in post for several years.

The Certificate in Careers Leadership (Level 6) is a work-based qualification for those working in the private sector or without CEC-funding, and is essential training for those who are either new to the career leadership role or wish to develop within the role.
Successful completion meets the qualification requirement for the Directory of Registered Career Leaders.
