Request for member input to international career development survey
The CDI has been asked to share a survey by a Japanese high-school student who is conducting an international comparative survey on students’ educational and career pathway choices.
The international comparative research project looks at students’ educational and career pathway choices, help-seeking, and self-determination and started from a
concern that many young people feel that they must identify one “correct” pathway and make an important decision independently, even when they are uncertain or do not yet have enough information.
The student is examining why students may hesitate to speak openly about uncertainty, reconsider an earlier decision, or seek guidance from teachers, career professionals, family members, and other adults. They are particularly interested in whether seeking support is mistakenly viewed as a loss of independence, when it may actually help students make more thoughtful and personally meaningful choices.
Perspectives from CDI members would help them understand how qualified practitioners support young people’s agency while also providing the guidance, information, and reassurance they need.
The questionnaire takes approximately five to ten minutes. Detailed knowledge of the Japanese education system is not required to complete this survey, with perspectives based on your own country or region, professional experience, research, and area of expertise welcome.
