UK Government announces nuclear and AI investment to boost jobs in North Wales

During a visit to Coleg Menai in Anglesey, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer unveiled plans for a small modular nuclear reactor and an AI growth zone in North Wales. He described the initiative as “probably the biggest announcement for a generation” in the region.

The combined nuclear and AI projects are expected to generate over 6,500 jobs in North Wales, supporting both high-skilled employment and local economic development.

The announcement aligns with the government’s broader industrial strategy to decentralise economic growth and invest in future-facing sectors like clean energy and artificial intelligence.

The initiative is backed by key cabinet members including Rachel Reeves and Ed Miliband, highlighting cross-departmental commitment to regional development.

Starmer’s visit included discussions with students and staff, reinforcing the role of education and skills development in delivering the long-term benefits of the investment.
