Green careers guidance: practical tips from ISEP’s Martin Baxter
Careers advisers have a key role in helping young people who feel anxious about climate change see a way to make a difference, according to Martin Baxter, Deputy CEO of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP). Speaking to the CDI ahead of Green Careers Week, Martin said he sees “an element of despair” among some young people concerned about the planet’s future.
“The one thing I’d change is to show people how they can be part of the solution, through the work pathways they choose,” he said. Martin, who largely drafted the opening section of the UK’s Environment Act, says green skills are now needed in every sector, with opportunities ranging from skilled trades such as cable jointing to behavioural science, communications and community engagement.
Practical takeaways from the interview, along with a myth buster to share with clients, are now available in the CDI resources section.
Careers and labour market information consultant Helen Janota will explore the green jobs market in more depth in a CDI webinar on Wednesday 4 November at 4pm.
