The three reasons driving falling job vacancies

In this article in The Conversation, Paul Allen and Amr Saber Algarhi from Sheffield Hallam University explore the reasons behind the low job vacancy levels in the UK. Vacancies have fallen for 39 quarters and sit below pre-pandemic levels.

The three reasons they cite are higher employment costs – such as the National Insurance rise and higher minimum wage levels, more employees being ‘job huggers’ and not moving roles, and finally, the impact of automation and AI – particularly on entry-level roles.
