Maintenance grants to be reintroduced for study at levels 4-6
Bridget Phillipson announced that maintenance grants will be reintroduced by the end of this parliament for young people from low-income families. The policy was also covered in the Post-16 Education and Skills White paper published this week.
Previous maintenance grants were abolished in 2016. The new maintenance grants will be means tested to help students from the lowest income households undertake courses related to the Government’s missions and Industrial Strategy.
With maintenance loans having seen a 20% real-terms decline in value, students – and especially those from low-income households – are struggling with the cost of living while studying.
The loans will be targeted at eligible students ‘on priority courses aligned with the government’s missions and the Industrial Strategy at Levels 4 to 6’ as part of the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. Eligible courses will include technical qualifications and degrees.
These grants will be funded by a new International Student levy, with more details to be shared in the autumn Budget.
