Government launches National Youth Strategy, including careers support
The UK Government has launched its National Youth Strategy on the back of a survey of 14,000 young people. The strategy will see three ‘big shifts’ over the next decade – moving from national to local decisions, from fragmented to collaborative services, and from excluded to empowered with young people able to vote from the age of 16 and having an input to programme design.
The strategy aims to put more trusted adults into the community and offer more support to families (a separate announcement was made about new funding for youth clubs). Fifty Youth Futures hubs will be created offering a range of services including careers support ‘led by trained adults who are there for you’. It also says Youth Workers would be better trained to offer support including careers advice – which is concerning.
The ‘Good work’ strand includes the Youth Guarantee and an expansion of Employment Hubs ‘to make sure every young person can access high-quality career advice and learning and earning opportunities’. It also promises better advice at school or college – though the description suggests this is the changes to the Gatsby benchmarks already incorporated into the Statutory Guidance and the work experience policy.
