A Work, Health, and Skills Plan for Wales

Learning & Work Institute has published a new report focused on the labour market in Wales and looking at how those most disadvantaged can engage.

Wales has an employment rate of only 73.4% of the working age population, compared to 75.4% for the whole of the UK and L&WI calls for a bold plan to clear the gap within the next decade.

The research, funded by Serco, comes as the UK Government prepares to devolve Jobcentre Plus to streamline and enhance employment support, giving Wales more autonomy over the deign and delivery of employment policy.

The report found that Wales has higher rates of economic inactivity than England (15.8% vs 14.2%), that women are more likely to be economically inactive (18.8% vs 12.7%) as are those from ethnic minority groups (18.0% vs 15.7%).

It recommends the creation of a ten-year plan to address the gap, dedicated support to transition 60,000 more people into work, an extra £180m of funding and improved data sharing.
