Young people ready to work – Youth Voice census 2026
Youth Employment UK today launched the report of The Youth Voice Census 2026, highlighting young people’s motivations and the barriers they face. The Census is the largest survey of young people across the UK, with over 11,500 young people aged 11-30 taking part.
The report identified that young people feel that everyday pressures, such as the state of the economy and affordability, are limiting their choices. More young people want to work, but they feel that the route into work has become more difficult - with a lack of work experience remaining the biggest barrier to employment.
Young people are developing skills but find that preparation doesn’t lead to progress. They are confident in their skills which match those employers most need but feel they lack experience. They do value education, but more are finding their learning disrupted, with a growing number having more serious issues.
And finally, whole employment is usually a positive experience, young people feel increased pressure in work, higher workloads and discrimination.
The report proposes five recommendations to support young people;

- Establish a Young Person’s Entitlement from 11-18.
- Turn the Youth Guarantee into a permanent Youth Participation System.
- Make access and local opportunity part of the infrastructure.
- Create a practical Employer Participation Framework.
- Create a Youth Participation Outcomes Framework.
