Medr highlights importance of lifelong learning in Wales

As Medr completes its first year as Wales's Commission for Tertiary Education and Research, attention is turning to the challenges and opportunities facing the country's education and skills system. A key theme emerging from recent discussions is the need to support learning throughout people's lives, helping individuals adapt to changing economic and workforce demands.

Rapid developments in technology, demographic change and evolving labour market requirements mean that many people are likely to need opportunities to upskill, reskill or retrain during their careers. This places increasing importance on accessible and flexible learning pathways that extend beyond traditional routes into education and employment.

The discussion also highlights the importance of a joined-up approach across further education, higher education, apprenticeships and adult learning. Creating clearer progression routes and improving access to learning opportunities will be central to helping Wales respond to future skills needs and economic priorities.

These themes reinforce the importance of supporting individuals through multiple career transitions. Careers guidance, labour market information and lifelong access to learning will play an increasingly significant role as people navigate changing career pathways throughout their working lives.
