Work experience for all – insights and policy recommendations

Futures for All has published a summary of regional roundtable discussions on ‘High quality and high-impact work experience for all’. The organisation, in collaboration with the Northern Powerhouse Partnership, hosted two roundtables in Liverpool and Manchester, attended by the Mayors, businesses and education leaders.

The roundtables explored how to effectively implement high-quality, high-impact work experience for young people, as it is seen as a crucial part of careers education and giving them skills to succeed in work.

Key insights included ensuring schools are funded and staffed to deliver work experience programmes – with education leaders highlighting significant gaps. Work experience needs to be embedded in careers education, with greater investment.

The discussions also highlighted the need to embed work experience into careers education from an early age, ideally at primary school. They also expressed the need for young people to have access to tailored careers guidance to get line of sight from the work experience to their career aspirations.

The report also raises the need to incentivise employers to participate in work experience programmes, to challenge inequality of access to high-quality work experience and make the most of regional resources through devolution.
