Welsh training providers welcome Tour de France employability programme

Training providers across Wales have praised a new employability programme launched alongside the Tour de France Grand Départ. The programme will allow 300 young people aged from 18 to 25 to gain work experience through volunteering at the Grands Départs of both the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift from Britain in 2027.

The initiative uses the excitement and visibility of the event to engage individuals who are out of work, offering a fresh way to build confidence, reconnect with learning and explore new career options. Providers say the programme has helped reach people who may not respond to more traditional employability support.

The programme is being delivered through partnerships between local authorities, employability teams and community‑based training organisations. Activities include cycling‑themed workshops, wellbeing sessions, group challenges and introductions to local employers. Participants also have access to accredited training and personalised guidance to help them move closer to employment.

Lisa Mytton, the National Training Federation for Wales’ strategic director, said: “The NTFW is pressing the new Welsh Government to prioritise reducing the NEET rate for young people aged 16 to 24 in Wales. Our members are committed to doing everything they can to address this serious issue by providing young people with the skills they need to secure employment and develop a career.”

This initiative demonstrates how creative engagement methods and partnerships around large‑scale events can open up new pathways into learning, volunteering and employment.
