UK Government invests £200m on SEND training package

The Department for Education has announced a £200m investment in ‘the most comprehensive training package on SEND and inclusion the English education system has ever seen.’

Announced by Secretary of State Bridget Phillipson, the move recognises that training for staff in schools and colleges is needed to ensure learners with SEND get the support they need and avoid inconsistency of delivery.

The ambition is for every teacher and educator to have the resources and training they need to give learners with SEND the support they need in every setting. The Government will develop resources and materials, with input from educators, which can be adapted to meet local needs.

Teachers and leaders will be able to sign up to a ‘flexible training programme’ that covers a range of topics and approaches. A new CPD programme will be made available to early years practitioners.

Careers staff weren’t specifically named in the announcement. Separately, the DfE is exploring SEND as one of several CPD options for careers advisers in schools.
