DfE-funded careers adviser training launches
On 30th October, Transform Your Training hosted an online conference to launch the Department for Education-funded CPD training for careers advisers in England.
Over 220 people joined the three-hour event and heard from Greg Boone from the DfE who gave an opening address with the background to the training and the benefits that the CPD offer aims to bring to practitioners and the young people they support.
Tammy Banks, CEO of Transform Your Training, introduced the organisation and the Guiding Careers: Changing Futures programme. She described how it aims to go beyond the core requirement of having 1,000 careers adviser attend training modules, through conferences, panels and online training to strengthen inclusive practice, with a person-centred approach that brings in lived-experience as well as professional expertise.
The core of the training will be half-day online training courses, monthly expert panels, communities of practice, Action Learning Sets, regional conferences, train-the-trainer scholarships and opportunities to connect with peers. Tammy explained how the programme has engaged careers advisers, experts and young people through a survey, focus groups and individual meetings. The final content for the six modules of training will be signed-off by DfE.
The breakout sessions gave an insight into the details of some of the key modules and included young people who shared their experiences of education and careers support. It was valuable to hear the barriers they faced in setting and achieving career goals and their thoughts on the support they would like to receive.
The panel discussion featured Education and Youth Lead at NYBEP Rachael Medley, Clinical Psychologist Dr Miriam Silver and ex-UNILAD founder Alex Partridge, as well as Jessica Bushell and Greg Boone from the DfE. The discussion explored key aspects of careers support for young people.
As well as the main talks and panels on the main screen, attendees were very engaged through the chat function, with the real-time feedback being positive. However, concerns were raised, especially during the panel discussion, about the challenges of providing higher levels of support in schools given the funding and resources available.
The launch aimed to offer more than just an overview of the CPD being offered, to instead be inspirational for attendees and encourage their engagement with the wider programme as it rolls out.
