The UK Government announced plans to tackle youth unemployment with a £1 billion programme to create 200,000 jobs and apprenticeships.

The plans, announced by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) aims to tackle to rising number of NEET young people, which has risen by 37% over the past few years, and the falling number of apprenticeship starts (down 40% in a decade).

A new Youth Jobs Grant is expected to help around 60,000 young people over three years by giving employers £3,000 for every 18-to-24-year-old they hire aged who has been on Universal Credit and looking for work for six months.

Another 90,000 are planned to benefit from an expansion of the Jobs Guarantee to include young people aged 22 to 24. Plus, new foundation apprenticeships in the hospitality and retail sectors will include up to £2,000 for employers taking on 16-to-21-year-olds.

In addition, the Government is planning further reform of the Growth and Skills Levy to prioritise young apprentices.
