Technical education pathways to start at 14
The Prime Minister has announced plans to give 14-year-olds access to technical education pathways.
They were announced as part of ‘fundamental changes’ to the education system, giving 14-year-olds ‘access to technical education, skills training, work experience and connections with employers’. It is part of a drive to balance parity of esteem between technical and academic routes that Prime Minister Andy Burnham has set out.
The aim is for the routes to be defined through the collaboration of schools, colleges, local leaders and employers to ensure pathways fit work opportunities in each area, with Ofsted changing the way they measure and inspect schools to include the quality of technical education provided.
From a CDI perspective, the announcement is positive, setting a clear goal for young people to be able to choose quality pathways whether they wish to explore technical or academic routes into their career. However, the detail will need to include clarity on those routes to address the current confusing choices, as well as investment in the support that young people and their parents and carers will need in making their choices – in high-quality career guidance for all.
