Skills England publishes first annual report

After one year in operation, Skills England has published its first annual report and skills review.

In addition, on 1st June Skills England and DWP colleagues held its first Skills England Expert Network webinar to share the report and update on progress. The webinar was attended by nearly 400 stakeholders from education, skills and industry, including the CDI.

Attended by Phil Smith, Chair, and Sarah Maclean, joint Chief Executive, of Skills England, the webinar covered the key areas of progress in the organisation’s first year and the current state of skills in England.

A key feature of the first year of Skills England has been the strengthening of the evidence base to generate insight to inform changes to the skills system. From that, the report identifies five key challenges facing the system in 2026:
  • Addressing skills shortages.
  • Maximising employer investment in skills.
  • Responding to the accelerated adoption of AI.
  • Supporting young people’s employability skills.
  • Building a more responsive and locally integrated skills system.

The paper also provides an overview of the current state of skills policy in England, acting as a handy reminder of the changes that have taken place and are planned, from the Industrial Strategy to the post-16 Education and Skills White Paper, from the Get Britain Working White Paper to technical Excellence Colleges.
