Post-16 learner destinations highlight employment and progression trends in Wales
Welsh Government has published its latest performance measures for post-16 learning, covering learner destinations from August 2021 to July 2023. The report provides detailed analysis of where learners progress after completing further education, sixth form, or work-based learning.
Most learners moved into employment or further study, with work-based learning showing high rates of progression into sustained jobs. Sixth form learners were more likely to continue into higher education, while further education learners showed a mixed pattern of employment and further study.
The data highlights variations by programme type and learner background. For example, learners from more disadvantaged areas were less likely to progress into higher education and more likely to enter lower-paid employment. Differences also emerged between vocational and academic pathways, with vocational learners more likely to move directly into the labour market.
While most learners progressed, the figures underline challenges in ensuring long-term stability, particularly for younger learners and those with lower prior attainment.
