Prime Minister sets out new two-thirds target for higher level skills
The Pime Minister has announced that the Government is moving away from the target of 50% of young people attending university – set during the Blair government – to instead aim for two-thirds of young people to gain higher level skills, through a combination of university, further education and apprenticeships.
The target has been backed by £800m of additional funding to support 20,000 18-19-year-olds as part of the Plan for Change, with 14 new Technical Excellence Colleges to be established, in addition to ten already announced, including five for defence.
The announcement is a boost for further education and for technical skills, aiming to afford them the same level of respect as university education.
