North Wales Skills Summit sets out regional workforce plans

A Welsh Government-led North Wales Skills Summit held in January set out plans to ensure the region’s workforce is ready to meet the demands of several major projects, including large‑scale renewable energy developments, transport upgrades and advanced manufacturing investments. The event brought together the Welsh Government, local authorities, FE colleges, universities, training providers and employers to discuss long‑term workforce needs.

Speakers highlighted the scale of opportunity linked to projects such as offshore wind expansion, hydrogen production, nuclear‑related activity and the North Wales Growth Deal. Employers emphasised the need for a pipeline of skilled workers in engineering, construction, digital technologies and environmental management. They also stressed the importance of improving pathways into technical roles and strengthening collaboration between industry and education.

Training providers noted the need for investment in specialist facilities and more flexible delivery models to support both young people and adults already in the workforce. The summit also explored how to ensure local communities benefit from new jobs, with a focus on apprenticeships, upskilling and targeted support for under‑represented groups.

The Welsh Government confirmed that insights from the summit will inform future regional skills planning and investment decisions.
