New CDI resource helps careers advisers practise more inclusively

A new CDI resource published alongside this month's CPD theme helps careers advisers better support LGBTQIA+ clients.

June puts LGBTQIA+ inclusion in the public eye and our CPD calendar reflects this theme. Alongside this, CDI has produced a new resource to help support practitioners.

Six Principles of Inclusive Practice helps careers advisers build confidence in working with LGBTQIA+ clients, drawing on research across education, psychology, organisational behaviour and public health to offer practical guidance for 1-2-1 work, marketing and communications, professional boundaries, and staying current as new studies emerge.

It covers the informed empathy that should underpin every interaction with LGBTQIA clients, which theoretical models have the strongest evidence behind them for guidance conversations, and how to recognise when a client's needs sit outside the scope of career guidance. There's also a section for practitioners working in schools, where new statutory guidance is expected to form part of Keeping Children Safe in Education from September 2026.

The research in this area is patchy but moving quickly. The resource includes pointers to the journals and university departments where the most relevant new work is being published.
