Job information changes students’ occupational interest in the Netherlands

A field experiment was carried out in 243 secondary schools across the Netherlands, involving 28,186 students, to see what impact labour market information can have on their education and career choices.

The researchers found that students’ perceptions of the labour market were often very inaccurate before the intervention. Once they had been provided with information about job opportunities and wages for the occupations they had expressed an interest in, their views became more accurate and their interests switched to careers with better prospects.

It also led them to be more likely to enrol in an education or training programme, with those doing so being more likely to be in higher earning roles up to four years after the intervention.
