Skills needs of the UK’s industrial growth sectors
L&WI have published the second in a series of reports looking at employer training and skills needs, explores the opportunities and challenges facing the UK Government’s growth sectors. It covers the results of data analysis on the level of skills UK employers need cand the training that they provide.
It achieves this using UK labour market data as well as international survey evidence and job postings, to estimate skills demand and training provision.
Key sectors in the UK economy have continued to see employment growth, with around 300,000 jobs added in the four sectors over the past five years covered by the research. These four sectors see ‘demand for higher level qualifications, technical depth and sector specific expertise’, with essential work skills continuing to be required more generally.
The report highlights that workers with technical depth combined with interpersonal skills are increasingly in demand by employers. This reflects the greater focus on skills changes in employer recruitment adverts.
The sectors were largely in line with the average for skills gaps, with key issues being in more localised function and/or geographic areas, and in recruiting new people with the requisite skills.
At the same time, the report highlights that employer investment in training has fallen by 13% per employee over the last few years and by 29% since 2011.
