House of Lords report recommends better transition support for autistic young people

The House of Lords Autism Act 2009 Committee has published its report with recommendations for a new autism strategy in 2026. The report, ‘Time to deliver: The Autism Act 2009 and the new autism strategy’ explored how well the Autism Act has been working, what more needs to be done and what has been achieved under the existing strategy.

The key recommendations include:
  • Initiatives to increase understanding and acceptance of autism.
  • Reducing autism assessment waiting times.
  • Strong community services to be in place to end the detention of autistic people.
  • Build capability for educating autistic young people in all kinds of provision.
  • Provide further support to employers.
  • Develop effective support for autistic people in the criminal justice system.

The report also called for local authorities and NHS bodies to support autistic people as they transition into adulthood, including education, employment, housing and mental health.

The report stated that ‘Schools play a critical role in preparing autistic children and young people for adulthood, including through functional skills education, careers advice and helping arrange work experience.’ (p.137) and there is a positive example from Outcomes First Group where 97% of students from their special schools go onto meaningful destinations, high above the national average. The Group argues for dedicated SEND support focused on employability and careers advice.
