Government and retailers target 100,000 jobs for young people
Ahead of the publication of the final Milburn report, the Government has announced an initiative with the retail sector to create 100,000 new jobs for young people by the end of this Parliament.
Alan Milburn’s interim report highlighted the fall in Saturday and entry-level jobs for young people in sectors such as retail and care, so this initiative feels like a direct response to that finding.
The new scheme will offer 18-24-year-olds work experience in retailers such as John Lewis, Currys and Costa. Alongside this scheme, the DWP and British Retail Consortium are launching ‘Opening Shift’, a work experience programme offering 18-24-year-olds two to four weeks’ hands on work experience. This follows announcements by Marks and Spencer to offer 1,000 training places and by Sainsbury’s offering 10,000 work experience opportunities.
Eligible young people on Universal Credit who are looking for work will be referred to the work experience placements by Jobcentres.
