Funding for Employment Advisors in Talking Therapies limited to unemployed
The Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Health and Social Care have confirmed that from April 2027, there will be no funding for Employment Advisors in NHS Talking Therapies to support people in work or off sick. They state that central funding will ‘focus on supporting patients who are out of work’.
The decision had been accidentally communicated online before the announcement causing uncertainty, and the DWP/DHSC clarified the situation in a letter to staff.
They say the decision is based a review of evidence of supporting people who are out of work and a desire to focus where the funding has greatest impact, although it doesn’t say that the support for those in work hasn’t delivered value.
There is no detail on how many Employment Advisers – some of whom are CDI members – are affected or what will happen to their posts. It recommends they speak to their managers and local teams ‘as plans develop’.
Talking Therapies expanded beyond the initial pilot from 2022 and has supported over 347,000 people, in work and unemployed, since launch.
