Careers Wales’ green careers challenge brings renewable energy to life
Welsh pupils have been exploring careers in the renewable energy sector through a series of employer-led challenges organised by Careers Wales. Delivered through the Work in Focus programme, the activities were developed in partnership with Green GEN Cymru and National Grid and were based on real workplace tasks.
At St John Lloyd Catholic School in Llanelli, learners considered the opportunities and challenges associated with renewable energy projects while creating podcasts linked to developments in the sector. At Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn, learners completed a challenge based on a real industry task, researching options for installing electrical infrastructure and presenting their recommendations to a judging panel.
Alongside developing knowledge of renewable energy and decarbonisation, learners strengthened a range of transferable skills including communication, teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills. The activities helped learners see how classroom learning can relate to future employment opportunities.
The initiative demonstrates how partnerships between schools, employers and careers services can help learners engage with emerging industries and growth sectors. It also reflects the increasing emphasis on supporting young people to understand Wales's net zero ambitions and the career opportunities associated with them.
