Career readiness remains static for year 11 pupils but rises for year 13

The Careers & Enterprise Company has published its latest Insight Briefing on Learner career readiness in 2024/25. The insights are from the Future Skills Questionnaire, which was completed by 331,000 pupils from 1,425 education institutions in 44 Career Hubs.

The questionnaire explored their career knowledge and skills, industry and careers interests and essential skills for work and life.

Overall, there were small changes in the career readiness of pupils in years 10, 12 and 13, but no change for those in years 7, 8, 9 and 11. As previously, career readiness improves with age, from 49% in year 7 to 68% in year 11 and 79% in year 13.

The briefing outlines three key themes for further development of career readiness. Theme 1 is earlier engagement with careers education, theme 2 is boosting alignment with the labour market and theme 3 is the need for targeted and sustained support for key groups, such as pupils on free school meals and particularly white working class boys.
