Business leader confidence in the economy improves

The August data for the Institute of Directors’ Economic Confidence Index saw a rise in confidence among business leaders regarding the UK the economy, up from -63 to -49. However, they were slightly less confident than previously about the prospects of their own organisations, down from -2 to -5.

Despite that, their revenue expectations improved from +9 to +12, headcount confidence was slightly up from -7 to -6 and investment intentions rose from -13 to -9.

The UK economic conditions are still the biggest factor affecting business, though was slightly down. With Andy Burnham becoming PM, taxation concerns rose as a concern and tax uncertainty was considered to be one of the biggest things to be affecting growth and investment.

Global economic conditions fell from 43% to 36% as a source of concern, overtaken by compliance and regulation, and cost of energy as causes for concern.
