Better employment support would help over-50s stay in work

Research by Warwick Institute of Employment Research shows better employment support can help over-50s stay in and return to work.

The research, funded by the Standard Life Centre for the Future of Retirement, reviewed UK and international evidence on labour market programmes aimed at people aged 50 and above.

As populations age and governments need to encourage people to work for longer, it is important to have programmes that support older adults to continue working. The UK has declining workplace participation from the age of 55, with employment rates lowest among the poorest adults, those with disabilities and Black men. Those in low quality or insecure roles are most likely to stop working due to ill health.

The paper reviews UK and international programmes and concludes that employment programmes need to offer tailored support, combine services into holistic support covering health and employment, engage employers to support older workers, provide digital skills training and use data to identify what works for each sub-group.
