Many careers professionals want to support learners with SEND, but can feel uncertain about the law, the language, and where their responsibility begins and ends. This webinar provides a clear, practical overview of SEND legislation terminology and terminology in England, as well as ethical considerations from a career guidance perspective.
The session will unpack what key legislation actually says, clarify commonly misunderstood terms, and challenge persistent myths around SEND, capacity and risk. Particular attention is given to confidentiality, consent and information-sharing, helping practitioners feel confident in making legally sound, ethically robust decisions. Grounded in real practice rather than theory alone, this webinar is designed to replace anxiety with clarity and confidence.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Explain key SEND legislation and statutory guidance relevant to careers guidance, including the SEND Code of Practice and Equality Act, and understand how these apply in everyday practice.
2. Use SEND terminology confidently and appropriately, recognising common misconceptions and myths that can undermine inclusive careers guidance.
3. Navigate confidentiality, consent and professional boundaries when working with SEND learners, families and multi-agency teams, with clarity about legal and ethical responsibilities.
This session supports the following competency areas:
• Career Development Practice
• Professional Practice, Values, and Ethics
