Career Guidance Under Constraint: What the evidence tells us and what should happen next?

What happens to career guidance when practitioners are not given sufficient time or capacity to deliver it as intended? Carl Jackson will present the headline findings from his independently published working paper, Career Guidance Under Constraint: Practitioner perspectives on time, capacity and delivery conditions. The session will examine appointment length and volume, administrative workload, follow-up capacity, wider role expectations and the potential implications of these pressures for guidance quality, equity and practitioner sustainability.

This will be both a research briefing and an opportunity for professional discussion. Through polls and structured questions, attendees will be invited to consider whether the findings reflect their own experiences, identify the changes that could make the greatest practical difference and respond to the paper’s recommendations. The discussion will also explore possible next steps, including further research, practical professional guidance, improved sector measurement and the potential for coordinated advocacy. By the end of the session, participants will have a clearer understanding of the evidence, its limitations and implications, while contributing their own perspectives to the developing conversation.
