Work and Pensions Committee report on NEETs
The House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee has published its report on youth employment, education and training, including recommendations to tackle the ongoing NEET crisis.
At a time when the youth unemployment rate hit a decade-high 16.4%, MPs on the Committee published the findings of their review. It highlights a ‘lack of coherence’ across government departments, with a failure to align policies across education, training and employment.
It calls on the government to develop a youth employment strategy targeting the UK’s NEET rate, including changes to tax and benefits rules that undermine progress. It identifies that the UK has had a history of short-term policies, while the issues can only be addressed by long-term commitment. With investment, it sees the Youth Guarantee as having potential, as well as apprenticeships, if both receive long term commitment.
