Welsh Government’s Skills Audit and Summit shape future priorities

The Welsh Government's Skills Audit for Wales has reached an important stage, bringing together evidence from employers, education providers, training organisations and other stakeholders to identify the skills Wales will need over the coming years. The audit is the first of its kind since 2012 and has been commissioned to help policymakers, employers and providers respond to significant economic, technological and social change.

Early findings from the audit informed discussions at the Future Skills Summit, which brought together employers, educators, learners, training providers and policymakers from across Wales on 7th October. The summit sought to help shape future reforms to vocational education and training, ensuring that the skills system is better aligned to labour market needs and future economic opportunities.

Key themes emerging from the discussions include digital skills, green technologies, workforce adaptability and stronger links between education, training and employment. The Welsh Government has described the work as a significant opportunity to develop a skills system that is more responsive to employers while creating clearer pathways for learners.

The findings will also be of interest to career development professionals across Wales. Skills reform and workforce priorities will be explored further at the CDI Cymru Professional Forum on 4 February 2027. The Skills Agenda in Wales: Evidence, Priorities and Next Steps will feature a keynote update from Cefin Campbell MS, Deputy Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education, who is leading the Skills Audit on behalf of Welsh Government, alongside discussion of the latest Skills Audit developments and what employers, learners and services need from the skills system of the future.

You can read more about Working together for a skilled Wales and book your place at the CDI Forum to hear from the Deputy Minister.
