TUC report highlights the scale of insecure work across the UK

Ahead of its Annual Congress the TUC has published a report on insecure employment in the UK. It estimates that in 2024 there were 4 million people in insecure employment - an increase from 3.1 million people in 2011, though this equates to only a rise in the proportion of workers from 10.7% to 11.7%.

The report states that insecure work makes it hard for people to budget, plan their wider life and meet caring responsibilities. It is also typically low paid.

The levels of insecure work vary across the UK, with Wales and South East England having the highest proportion (13.5%) and East of England having the lowest (10.5%). Scotland has a rate of 11.2% and Northern Ireland is at 11.7%.
