Tailored employment scheme blazing a trail into workplaces in Wales

Wales’ innovative Trailblazer employment programme has launched in Blaenau Gwent, marking the second of three pilot areas aimed at tackling economic inactivity. Funded by the UK Government’s £10 million “Get Britain Working” initiative, the scheme targets people with health conditions, disabilities, or caring responsibilities through tailored support including mentoring, counselling, and wellbeing services.

Ministers from both Welsh and UK Governments visited Ebbw Vale to see projects in action, including green skills training and support for the traveller community. The programme’s localised approach allows communities to design solutions that reflect their unique challenges—moving away from one-size-fits-all employment support.

With confirmed funding for a second year, Trailblazers will continue to help people build confidence, improve wellbeing, and gain skills for sustainable employment. The initiative is part of wider reforms to promote fair work and healthier communities with Trailblazer projects being piloted across Blaenau Gwent, Denbighshire, and Neath Port Talbot.
