State of the Nation report highlights UK’s social mobility challenges

The 2025 State of the Nation report by the Social Mobility Commission shows that the UK sits in the middle of the pack in international comparisons but highlights some worrying trends.

The UK has comparable levels of absolute occupational mobility to other western European countries but sees some concerning trends such as declining upward income mobility and deteriorating housing mobility. These are most likely to be driven by low growth in real wages and rising house prices.

The report compares the UK to European and other western countries, looking at income mobility, education and other factors. It also explores the regional disparities within the UK – with the ex-industrial areas experiencing most disadvantage.
