Social Market Foundation launches apprenticeship campaign

The Social Market Foundation has launched a new campaign to make higher and degree apprenticeships more accessible to people from all backgrounds.

‘Apprenticeships Without Barriers’ highlights that the potential for apprenticeships to improve social mobility is being undermined by their concentration in a few postcodes and are less available to those from low-income backgrounds.

It highlights that 32% of degree apprenticeships a re available in just 10 postcode areas of the UK, and they are 3.5 times less accessible than entry to Russell Group universities.

The campaign calls for expanded careers outreach, recruitment for potential, not privilege, greater recognition for vocational qualifications, regional provision targets, travel support for apprentices, cover for the cost of relocation and better identification of where low-income learners are missing out.
