Report identifies productivity heroes in Wales
Economic Intelligence Wales has identified 1,732 “Productivity Heroes” across Wales. Together these firms generated around £6.04 billion in turnover while creating more than 5,200 jobs. As the report notes, “the analysis suggests businesses can raise productivity without compromising employment growth”, highlighting practical lessons for leadership, skills and management capability within SMEs.
High performing firms were found across manufacturing, construction, professional services, wholesale and hospitality. They share a strong customer focus, investment in people, and uptake of innovation and digital tools. Skills development and effective management are identified as core enablers of productivity, supporting sustained gains alongside new recruitment.
Although the number of identified firms has fallen since a recent peak, labour productivity has risen by roughly a quarter. The trend points to the value of targeted support for leadership, skills and innovation readiness. Policymakers are expected to use the findings to focus finance and advice where it has greatest impact. Providers can draw on the benchmarks to shape programmes that help employers upskill and grow.
