Report compares lifelong learning across the UK
A report from the Lifelong Education Institute and the Quality Assurance Agency compares the approaches to lifelong learning across the home nations.
The ‘Cross-nation lifelong learning report’ states that, while the UK doesn’t need one system for lifelong learning, there should be systematic learning between the nations as ‘no nation has yet successfully combined affordability, flexibility and sufficient provision’.
The report finds that each nation has a different approach; for example, Scotland has established the strongest approach to lifelong learning, whereas Wales has a principles-based approach which is well embedded. Northern Ireland includes flexible initiatives while England’s Lifelong Learning Entitlement is a major source of funding for higher education learning.
While it doesn’t see a significant migration of learners between nations, the report does raise concerns for employers trying to support learning across the different systems in the UK, and the potential challenges of recognition of credentials. It calls for greater co-ordination across the nations, with the system leaders building in systemic opportunities to learn lessons from the other systems across the UK.
