Public overestimate graduate regret and underestimate university value

A survey of over 2,000 UK adults by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) and the Policy Institute at King’s College London has analysed the perceptions of the public regarding university education.

It found they significantly overestimated the level of student regret – believing that 40% of graduates would change their mind about going to university if they could choose again, whereas the real figure is only 8%.

Similarly they think 49% of students find their life negatively impacted by student debt, whereas only 16% feel that way.

At the same time, they significantly underestimate the economic power of universities, ranking them lower than many organisations that have lower income and economic impact.
