New report outlines the role of AI in career guidance

The Nuffield Foundation and Ada Lovelace Institute have published their latest report, ‘Navigating the future: a landscape review of AI in career guidance for young people’, which explores how AI is being used to support young people’s learning and career choices. The report examines the opportunities and risks of using AI, as well as setting out principles for ethical and effective use.

With the increasing interest in AI and scope for it to play a role in enabling access to information, advice and guidance, the authors see that it is important that those making decisions about the use of AI in career guidance understand what AI is, how it works and the circumstances in which it may or may not be beneficial.

The report is the result of a year-long investigation by the Nuffield Foundation (with their expertise in education to work transition) and the Ada Lovelace Institute (with a sociotechnical understanding of data-driven systems and AI). The authors also conducted a literature review and engaged a wide range of experts.

The recommendations are aimed at career development practitioners, policymakers, AI developers, education leaders, employers and researchers. The report is part of an ongoing programme exploring aspects of AI and Education.
