National Mission on Work Experience launched by UK Government
Alongside the UK Government’s announcement of Vocational GCSEs, it also launched its National Mission on Work Experience, aiming to provide 200,000 additional work experience placements for young people aged 14 to 16.
The Mission aims to work with mayors and local authorities to make links between schools and employers, with employers encouraged to contact their local Careers Hub.
No10 North [sic] will host work placements to give young people access to experience of working in the government sector and support the Mission.
The Mission is announced on the back of several reports highlighting the lack of opportunities for many young people to gain experience of work – including in the interim Milburn report on NEETs and the White Working Class Inquiry.
The announcement didn’t indicate that any additional funding was being made available to schools or Careers Hubs to deliver the Mission, despite schools flagging that their careers resources are already stretched. There is a £140m pilot of employer brokerage services in mayoral authorities to generate more apprenticeship placements being run by DWP but this is a separate exercise and it is not clear if the call for more apprenticeships and work experience will be aligned.
