Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone Secures £300 Million Investment
Lanarkshire is set to become a major centre for artificial intelligence and technology following a £300 million investment package and the announcement that Dell Technologies will establish its Scottish base in the area. The investment is expected to support more than 3,400 jobs, alongside new skills and training opportunities for local people.
The funding will enable DataVita to expand its existing data centre and construct a second facility within the Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone. A £202 million guarantee from the National Wealth Fund is helping unlock the wider £300 million financing package, backed by a group of financial institutions. The development is expected to create employment opportunities during both construction and ongoing operation, while providing infrastructure designed to attract further investment to Scotland.
Dell Technologies will move its Scottish team to Mercury House at Lanarkshire’s AI Innovation Park. The company says its presence will contribute to a growing community focused on AI innovation, skills and collaboration. The wider development is expected to create opportunities across technology, engineering, construction and the growing AI sector, highlighting the range of occupations that may benefit from investment in AI infrastructure.
The development also includes a £543 million community fund, which is expected to support skills and training programmes linked to AI, as well as initiatives such as after-school coding clubs. With the site expected to be among the first AI Growth Zones in the UK to have cutting-edge AI chips installed, the investment highlights the growing importance of digital and technical skills to Scotland’s future labour market.
