Edge launches Small Business Summer to engage young people

Edge Foundation has launched Small Business Summer, the next step in its Apprenticeships Work campaign, encouraging SMEs to connect with young people.

The aim is to make it easier for young people in years 7 to 13 to learn more about local businesses and explore the benefits of undertaking an apprenticeship in a smaller employer. It also supports small business to look at ways of connecting with young people in their local areas and move towards offering apprenticeships.

Small businesses account for 60% of all employment in the UK but only 37% of apprentices – which ahs fallen significantly since the adoption of the Apprenticeship Levy. Yet young people are increasingly interested in apprenticeships and many areas lack significant numbers of large employers.

While the campaign is aimed at small employers, it may provide an opportunity for careers teams in schools and colleges to engage local employers.
