CSJ calls for specialist careers guidance to help 50-64-year-olds back into work
The Centre for Social Justice have published their report, ‘Midlife Mission: Helping 50-64-year-olds back to work’. The report explores the impact of high inactivity rates among older workers and calls for a number of changes to be made to help people back into work.
These recommendations include a new 50+employment strategy, nationwide roll-out of WorkWell, enhanced Access to Work provision and age-specialist careers guidance embedded in the new Jobs and Careers Service.
The report recognises that many older adults don’t see careers guidance as relevant to them, so the government needs to ensure the Jobs and Careers Service includes specialist support for people over 50, with trained specialist careers advisers, focused on addressing specific barriers such as low confidence. The Jobs and Careers Service should also offer voluntary careers reviews.
