CEC publishes insights on careers education in England for 2024-25

CEC has published its annual Careers Education in England report for 2024-25 drawing on data from 330,000 young people, 4,863 schools and colleges and 783 employers.

Following an online briefing on Friday 27th February, the report has been published to give wider context for further development of the careers system in England. Insights cover three main areas; how careers education is improving, how it is preparing young people for the world of work and how employers are engaging and the benefits they see from it.

The report shows that the Gatsby Benchmark achievement has increased for the ninth year, with an average 6.0 Benchmarks achieved, compared to 5.8 the previous year. Those schools who are more engaged with different forms of support – such as being part of their Careers Hub – tend to have higher Benchmark achievement.

Insights include that the better a school’s careers provision, the more likely students feel ready for work and the less likely they are to be NEET. However, while there have been improvements in disadvantaged schools, gaps continue to exist. For example, girls tend to be more confident in their essential skills but less confident by year 11 in expressing those skills in interviews.

Businesses who engage in careers education are shown to achieve a return on their investment. They are more likely to report business benefits if they offer work experience opportunities for young people.
